The church was designed by J Russell MacKenzie of Aberdeen and it was opened on 22nd August 1877. It was built in Neo Gothic style using local brown sandstone. The church more reflects the scale of a private chapel rather than a parish church and there is a maximum seating of about ninety persons. Architectural features include the elaborately detailed façade facing the street with a screen of short columns, 4-stage tower and a bold Gothic arched recessed door.

The interior of the church typical of this style displays hammer beams on the roof and a chevroned pattern in the ceiling. The nave and sanctuary have volumes of differing height and a tall detailed Gothic arch separates them. Two doors lead off from the sanctuary; one on the left takes you to the base of the steeple and the one on the right leads to the Sacristy with an altar of modern design in the middle. The Stations of the Cross were painted by F Walterson, a Shetland Artist.
