Welcome to the Church of the Immaculate Conception (St Marys)

The site of the church sits midway between the old town and the new town. The church was financed from an endowment donated by Elsa Mona Rickart Hepburn, widow of William Rickart Hepburn of Rickarton. She sold the estate and house of Rickarton to Sir Alexander Baird and used the proceeds to build the cottages at Bridgefield. One cottage being the presbytery for the church of St Mary. It is believed that the church was built in memory of her daughter.

About the Church

  • The church was designed by J Russell MacKenzie of Aberdeen and it was opened on 22nd August 1877. It was built in Neo Gothic style using local brown sandstone. The church more reflects the scale of a private chapel rather than a parish church and there is a maximum seating of about ninety persons. Architectural features include the elaborately detailed façade facing the street with a screen of short columns, 4-stage tower and a bold Gothic arched recessed door.

  • The interior of the church typical of this style displays hammer beams on the roof and a chevroned pattern in the ceiling. The nave and sanctuary have volumes of differing height and a tall detailed Gothic arch separates them. Two doors lead off from the sanctuary; one on the left takes you to the base of the steeple and the one on the right leads to the Sacristy with an altar of modern design in the middle. The Stations of the Cross were painted by F Walterson, a Shetland Artist.
